Dallas Morning News Recommends Marchant for Re-election in 2010
February 3 , 2010
While this newspaper hasn't always seen eye-to-eye with Republican Rep. Kenny Marchant on such issues as immigration reform and financial industry bailouts, we respect him as a hard-working, thoughtful lawmaker who deserves another term representing the 24th Congressional District.
His three terms in Congress, service as Carrollton mayor and nine terms in the Texas Legislature make Marchant, 58, a better choice than challenger Frank Roszell, a 69-year-old Grapevine real estate investor seeking public office for the first time. There is no Democratic challenger in the fall.
Marchant said the nation's financial crisis warranted government intervention but differed with the scope of the Bush administration's attempts to stimulate the economy and rescue the financial industry. He could, he said, vote for parts of President Barack Obama's jobs bill – i.e. tax credits for small business and a spending freeze – if the full proposal didn't include "a lot of other junk." Marchant said he favors a payroll tax holiday to stimulate the economy. And on immigration, Marchant favors securing the borders and the E-verify system but opposes amnesty for those who have entered the country illegally.
Roszell disputes that the U.S. has suffered a financial crisis, calling the last couple of years a normal "business cycle," and he naively contends that the federal government should not have intervened. He also displays a disturbing lack of familiarity with major pieces of immigration policy and legislation.
